Jewish and Muslim youth commemorate Holocaust

It's nice to see Muslims reaching out to others in a respectful way. The Muslim community needs to do more of this.

Claire M. the mother of two young scouts, Zacari and Narimel, said she believed it was important to bring her children participate in the commemoration.

“As most little children, they probably don’t understand the full meaning of the tragedy,” she said, “but I think that by talking about the Holocaust and participating in these ceremonies they will little by little come to understand the horror of the genocide.”

“As Muslim scouts, we believe in dialogue and living together in respect for one another. I think it’s even more important to us, Muslims to participate in these ceremonies than it is for Christians, considering what is happening with the Jewish-Arab conflict and everything else that is happening today.

Free the Uighurs

They hate us for our freedom, eh?

The U.S. Supreme Court refused Monday to hear the emergency appeal of Abu Bakker Qassim and A'Del Abdu al-Hakim, who are seeking freedom after more than four years of wrongful imprisonment.

(snip)

A federal judge in Washington ruled in December that their continued detention is illegal but, in an appalling reflection on the impotence of the courts in the post-9/11 era, concluded he didn't have the power to do anything about it. An appeals court is due to hear their case next month.

'Hip' hijab takes on Dutch prejudices

What a great union of the best of Islamic and Western values--action hijabs!!! Check it out

...Within months, the "capster" was born, and quickly blossomed into a business. In four styles designed for tennis, skating, aerobics, and outdoor sports, van den Bremen's head coverings were sleek, safe, and - in the words of a local Islamic cleric - "Islamically correct."

3 U.S. commanders relieved of duty as Iraqi town mourns its dead

Man... this is so horrifying... Three marines massacred 15 civilians--including women and children--and they are NOT being held accountable for it. How hypocritical is that? Iraq didn't even have anything to do with Sep 11. Why are we there? This war is not good for anybody.

Safa trembled as Yaseen told the story to a visitor. She tried to tell it herself, but she couldn't. "My father told us to gather in one room, so the Americans could search," she said. And then she started to cry.

Yaseen said that Safa told him that four soldiers came into the bedroom, but only one did the yelling. Her mother, who had heard the shooting asked: "What did you do to my husband?" Her sisters, mother and aunt were crying. And then the one soldier who had been yelling started shooting.

Frightened, Safa fainted. She thought she had died. When she awoke, she remembered seeing her mother still lying in bed. Her head was blown open. She looked around and heard her 3-year-old brother, Mohammed, moan in pain. The blood was pouring out of his right arm.

Muslim group reveals plan for gay consensus

I was surprised to see this article, which states that the Muslim Council of Britain is working with the gay community there to combat prejudice! One thing that has saddened me greatly about the Muslim community is the vitriolic hatred of gays... How can we insist that people treat us without prejudice if we have so much prejudice ourselves? I hope this move by the MCB isn't just lip service, but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

Muhammed Aziz, policy advisor to the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), told PinkNews.co.uk that significant progress is expected following internal discussions after a productive All Party Parliamentary Group meeting earlier this year, which included the Muslim organisation and gay charity Stonewall.

Mr Aziz revealed plans to look at homophobia in the Muslim community and Islamophobia in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in reaction to controversial comments by MCB leader Sir Iqbal Sacranie on homosexuality.

Muslim TV host divides Danes

It is amazing to me how worked up people get over the hijab, much more so than the women who actually wear it. Just look at this condescending remark made by a Danish feminist w/ regards to a Muslim talk show host who recently began wearing hijab on air:

“The choice of Asmaa Abdol-Hamid is an insult to both Danish and Muslim women,” Vibeke Manniche, head of the Women for Freedom association, said. “She sends the signal that an honourable woman cannot go out unless her head is covered,” she added.

So without making any effort to understand why Ms. Abdol-Hamid chooses to wear hijab, this lady declares her choice as an "insult" to Muslim women. Sadly, many Westerners make this hasty judgement. As if Muslim women can't think for themselves. So, what was that about women's freedom again??
